The Karlovy Vary film festival has been an integral part of the Czech Republic’s cultural landscape for decades.
One integral part of every film is music, and so we have tried to find a way to bring these two independent fields of art – film and music – together. We couldn’t have found a better partner for this undertaking than the Czech Philharmonic, which embodies a unique tradition in the field of Czech music.
I am convinced that the first edition of Variations will be a success and that its exclusive program of film screenings and concerts will become a new tradition that will enrich the city and region of Karlovy Vary with a new cultural event for residents and visitors alike.
Jiří Bartoška
President, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival
The Czech Philharmonic has joined with the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival to present an exceptional project, Variations. Our goal is to bring the unique atmosphere of Karlovy Vary together with music and film at the highest level, to bring the festival atmosphere to town during the main concert season, and to offer something for everyone interested in music and film. And so we have not only organized a gala concert but have also joined with our colleagues from the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra to present a joint performance of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons featuring violinist Jiří Vodička, admission to which will be free of charge.
It’s important to us that, in relation to Variations, the modifier “unique” be more than just an empty word. The program that we have planned for 20 November at the Karlovy Vary Municipal Theatre – the Czech Philharmonic featuring Jakub Hrůša and Kian Soltani – has been put together exclusively for this occasion and cannot be seen anywhere else. I am glad that we have managed to bring together two worlds that, though they differ in form, share a desire to offer you a unique, magical, profound, and unforgettable experience.
