A program full of playfulness, melodic lightness, and virtuoso performances by a wind octet composed of musicians from the Czech Philharmonic and the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra. Fri 27 November 2026 / 8:00 pm
Karlovy Vary Municipal Theatre
Czech Philharmonic: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Antonín Dvořák
Two musical variations. Joy and melancholy. Two of the most famous Romantic composers, two different life stories. Tchaikovsky composed his famous Violin Concerto in D Major after one of the most difficult crises in his life, while Dvořák’s Fifth Symphony was made during a time of family happiness and creative flourishing. These two works filled with passion, tenderness, and the joy of life will be performed by the Czech Philharmonic under the direction of Petr Altrichter. The violin solo in Tchaikovsky’s concerto will be performed by the orchestra’s concertmaster Jan Mráček.
Sat 28 November 2026 / 11:00 am
Kaiserbad
The Debut
Well-off Mona (Julianne Moore) trades her quiet, uneventful life for the stage of a local community theatre run by the eccentric director Jerry (Paul Giamatti). Jesse Eisenberg’s third feature as a director combines sharp satire with psychological drama in a captivating, gently ironic tribute to the art of acting.
Sat 28 November 2026 / 2:00 pm
Thermal Spring Colonnade
Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
The Thermal Springs Colonnade resounds with the Baroque energy of Johann Sebastian Bach and the playful elegance of a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. These two giants of classical music will be represented by violin concertos – Bach by his Concerto in A Minor and Mozart by the Violin Concerto in D Major, written when he was just nineteen. The program is rounded out by Bach’s famous Air, whose captivating melody has found its way into the worlds of film and popular music. All performed by a chamber orchestra composed of musicians from the Czech Philharmonic and the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra, featuring solos by the Czech Philharmonic’s concertmaster Jan Fišer, who is also the chamber ensemble’s artistic director. Admission is free.
Sat 28 November 2026 / 3:00 pm
Kaiserbad
Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall
Acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, One Battle After Another) captured an extraordinary piano recital by Brooklyn indie-rock bard Cameron Winter at New York’s Carnegie Hall on 35mm film, transforming it into an immersive cinematic experience.
Sat 28 November 2026 / 5:00 pm
Congress Hall, Thermal
Virtuosi di basso: Gioachino Rossini, Claude Debussy, Antonín Dvořák
The thunderous overture to Rossini’s opera William Tell, the dreamlike musical landscapes of Claude Debussy, and the joyful finale of Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony. Three pieces by three legends of classical music, performed in unusual arrangements for eight cellos and one double bass. The Virtuosi di basso ensemble, directed by Václav Petr, concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic’s cello group, presents a diverse program featuring original arrangements by composer and arranger Tomáš Ille. Admission is free.
Sat 28 November 2026 / 7:30 pm
Kaiserbad
Elsinore
The film event of the autumn tells the true story of Ian Charleson, a Scottish actor and dancer who defied a grave illness in the late 1980s to play Hamlet at London’s National Theatre. Andrew Scott and Olivia Colman deliver tour-de-force performances in this gripping drama.

Dear friends,
This year marks the sixth edition of Variations, a project jointly organized by the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
This year marks the sixth edition of Variations, a project jointly organized by the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
The idea behind Variations was inspired several years ago by the possibility of creating a natural connection between these two artistic fields – music and film – and thus expanding the range of cultural activities available in Karlovy Vary outside the main season.
As in past years, Variations once again presents an extraordinary selection of music and film. The cinema at the Kaiserbad will host special sneak previews of attractive films that have made a splash at festivals around the world.
The music program will take place at traditional cultural venues such as the Karlovy Vary Municipal Theater, the Thermal Spring Colonnade, Hotel Thermal, and the Kaiserbad’s Zander Hall.
It brings us great pleasure to see that Variations has built a loyal audience and that each new edition confirms the project’s growing popularity with the public. I am convinced that Variations 2026 will once again be a vibrant addition to the autumn cultural program – not just for residents of the city and region of Karlovy Vary, but for visitors as well.
Kryštof Mucha
Executive director, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival
Dear audiences,
It brings me great joy that this year we can again meet in Karlovy Vary for this sixth edition of Variations. Since its founding, our project – born of a shared vision of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the Czech Philharmonic – has become a firmly established part of the city’s cultural life. This year’s edition is also exceptional in that it takes place in a year of important anniversaries for both organizers. The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is celebrating eighty years since its founding, and in January the Czech Philharmonic commemorated 130 years since its first concert.
The event’s main concert by the Czech Philharmonic at the Karlovy Vary Municipal Theatre will be conducted by Petr Altrichter, who is also celebrating a milestone this year – his 75th birthday. The concert opens with one of the most captivating works in the violin repertoire, Tschaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major. The violin solo will be performed by the philharmonic’s concertmaster Jan Mráček, whom local audiences will recognize from previous editions of Variations. The second half of the evening features Antonín Dvořák’s choral and pastoral Fifth Symphony.
Of course, Variations wouldn’t be complete without chamber concerts, once again performed by ensembles in which the musicians of the Czech Philharmonic come together with their colleagues from the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra. In the Kaiserbad’s Zander Hall, a wind octet conducted by Ondřej Vrabec will present the music of Mozart, Beethoven, and Gordon Jacob, and in the Thermal Spring Colonnade concertmaster Jan Fišer will conduct violin concertos by Bach and Mozart. Meanwhile, the Virtuosi di basso cello ensemble brings several arrangements by Tomáš Ille to the Hotel Thermal, including Rossini’s William Tell Overture (which many people will know from the Western series The Lone Ranger) and selected movements from Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony.
May this year’s Variations once again be an inspirational and joyful encounter with music.
Sincerely,
David Mareček
General director, Czech Philharmonic
